Manual therapy is a specialized education for physiotherapists, focusing primarily on orthopedic conditions such as joint dysfunctions and neurological disorders. Advanced programs, like the Maitland Concept, can take up to five years to complete and are regulated within the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) system, which holds university recognition
This education enhances physiotherapy expertise, allowing practitioners to refine non-specific diagnoses—such as ‘office syndrome,’ fibromyalgia, lumbalgia or non specific low back pain, among others—into specific conditions that can be effectively treated.
The training programs are primarily designed for physiotherapists and physicians (real medical doctors in medicine, “MDs”) only.
The treatment is primarily passive in nature but also includes active techniques to support the therapy, such as self-treatment exercises for home use.
It is recommended to ask about additional qualifications of this kind before undergoing such treatment. Both Maitland and Mulligan therapists can be found worldwide.
